CHAPTER 31

CHASE

As usual, Eric was right. I should have listened. Going to my dad’s house was not a good idea, but I had to know what really happened. Reading a report was one thing — seeing it for myself was another.

I sliced open the police tape on the door and stepped over the threshold.

The inside of the house was trashed. Broken glass. Upended furniture. Holes in the walls. And blood. Blood all over.

“Was it…?” I couldn’t even finish the question. I glanced back at Eric for confirmation.

He stopped near my dad’s recliner and squatted, sniffing. His nose wrinkled. “Yeah. It was him.”

Tiberius.

Tiberius attacked my dad.

“He came in the back door,” Eric said, following the dark, smeary trail of blood through the house. “Surprised him, which probably wasn’t all that hard. Looks like he hit him here, and here.” He pointed out head-shaped dents in the drywall and splotches of blood on the floor.

“Then dragged him upstairs,” I added. Tiptoeing around the blood, I slid up the stairs along the banister. “Straight into… my room.”

Blood pooled on the carpeting by my bed. The room was equally trashed. What little belongings I’d left behind were scattered around, as if in a rage. It was possible the Asshole contributed to the wreckage in a drunken stupor, but I had a feeling Tiberius did most of it.

“He was probably trying to find you and thought your father would know where you were,” Eric said, his gaze fixated upward.

“How do you know that?” I followed his gaze, taking in the blood splatters arcing across the ceiling. “Oh my God.”

It was one thing to see shit like this at a crime scene. Hell, it was one thing to be the one splattering blood and brains everywhere. But to see my dad’s blood slung around my childhood bedroom?

I felt hot and sick.

Shoving past Eric, I ran into the bathroom, catching myself against the sink. I wanted to throw up but nothing came.

Once I was sure I wouldn’t puke, I splashed cold water on my face, hoping it would help the feeling dissipate.

“He left you a message,” Eric said from the bedroom.

Wiping my mouth with my sleeve, I rejoined him, steeling myself for whatever he was looking at. “Where?”

He nodded to the space above my headboard. I only saw a blank wall.

“There.” He flicked on a small blacklight, moving it back and forth over the wall. The purplish light illuminated jagged letters. It looked like Tiberius used his fingers to write it. I shuddered to think about what he used as the liquid.

Do you want more blood on your hands, Chase? Eric can’t save you.

My legs trembled. I sank to the edge of my bed, staring at the glowing words.

Eric switched off the blacklight and sat next to me, his cool hand cupping the back of my neck. “Chase, listen to me. He’s trying to get inside your head. I won’t let anything happen to you. Ok? Do you hear me? You are not responsible for any of this.
